Wednesday in Queenstown is an interesting night. It’s not the weekend, so the big tourist crowds have thinned out a bit. It’s not Monday or Tuesday either, so the town still has some energy. If you’re staying midweek – or you’re a local who works weekends – Wednesday can actually be one of the better nights to be out.

The question is: what’s actually worth doing?

We’re biased (more on that in a second), but we’ve tried to put together an honest guide to your Wednesday night options in Queenstown.

Option 1: Go to a Pub Quiz

Wednesday is the biggest quiz night in Queenstown. A few venues run them, which means you have actual choices.

Beech Tree (Beach Street, 7pm) runs what most regulars consider the best quiz in town. Multiple rounds, real prizes, 26 taps of rotating NZ craft beer, a proper crowd, and a fireplace. Free entry. It fills up, so arriving from 6:30pm is a good idea – especially for groups of 4+.

Yes, this is our pub. But the reputation for the quiz was there before we started writing about it.

Local Queenstown (7pm) also runs on Wednesdays if you want an alternative.

A pub quiz is genuinely one of the best midweek activities in any town – and Queenstown is no different. It’s cheap, social, lasts a couple of hours, and gives you something to focus on other than whether you should have done the Remarkables yesterday when the weather was better.

Option 2: Eat Somewhere Worth Eating At

Wednesday night is a great time to get a table at restaurants that are fully booked on weekends. Queenstown has good food across the price range – from the Thai and Japanese spots on the lower Mall to the lake-view restaurants that require a booking on a Saturday. Wednesday is when you can usually walk into places that would turn you away on a weekend.

If you’re eating at Beech Tree on a Wednesday, the kitchen is open and the menu works well for a group – burgers, wings (ten flavours), steaks, meat platters. Not fine dining, but genuinely good food for the price.

Option 3: Do Something Outdoors (Early Evening)

Queenstown’s outdoor options don’t fully shut down at 5pm. In summer, you’ve got a couple of good hours of light after 7pm. A few that work on a Wednesday evening:

Wednesday tends to be quieter on the trails than weekends, which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you’re after.

Option 4: The Gondola and Skyline

The Skyline Gondola runs until 10pm most nights, including Wednesdays. The views from the top are genuinely one of the best things you can do in Queenstown – and going at dusk rather than midday means you see the lights come on across the lake. It’s not cheap, but Wednesday evening is a smart time – shorter queues than weekends, and the sunset timing in summer is excellent.

Option 5: Just Find a Good Bar

Queenstown has a lot of bars, and not all of them are worth your Wednesday evening. A few that consistently deliver on a midweek night:

Wednesday nights don’t have the chaos of a Friday or Saturday, which is actually a good thing if you want to have a conversation and hear yourself think.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you’re asking us – and you are, since you’re reading this – we’d say pub quiz at Beech Tree, then stay for a few beers after. It’s a complete Wednesday night: something to do, good beer, good atmosphere, and you’ll probably end up talking to the people at the next table.

It’s free to enter, the food is good, and the bar has 26 taps. You could do a lot worse.
